Use tools for navigation

Get information about features on the map

Use this tool to click on the map and get information about features

If several layers are available, click on the layer title to display feature properties
For some layers, two tabs are available : one (HTML) provides information from an individual feature in the Web Map Service(WMS) in HTML format, the second one (GeoSciML), provides information from an associated Web Feature Service(WFS) in GeoSciML format. There will only be a OneGeology Level 2 WFS response tab if a suitable WFS has been registered as being associated with a particular OneGeology Level 1 WMS service layer. The returned GeoSciML will contain data from within a 50m buffer around the click point.

Add layers to the map

Click this button to add layers to the map.

Available layers in the OneGeology Registry are listed, ordered according to Geographic area. Click the « + » button to expand the list and tick the layer you want to display on the map. Each time you tick a layer, it is added to the layer list.
You can order layers according to Geographic area, Data owner, Service provider
If a Web Map Service providing layers is not registered in the OneGeology Registry you can display these layers using the « OGC WMS » tab.
Enter the WMS URL, Click the Submit button.
When the connection is ok, click the « + » button to expand the list of layers and tick the layers you want to add to the map viewer.

Note : If a set of layers from a listed server is greyed out and not selectable for display - this means that those services are temporarily unavailable on the WWW. To see the current availability status of OneGeology registered servers select the World-OneGeology Map Servers layer, this is updated every 15 mn

Manage layers

Click this button to expand the list of currently displayed layers

Four icons on the left allow you to :
  • show or hide the layer
  • move the layer up
  • move the layer down
  • delete the layer from this visible list
Use a combination of the layer up and layer down tool and the opacity slider to ensure that you are not hiding a layer that you wish to see under another layer that has show layer ticked on
Use the « opacity » slider to change the layer transparency and thus possibly see layer(s) displayed underneath.

Note: The symbol is displayed when there is no answer from the server within 30 seconds.
Click this button to get more information about the layer
This list provides information about the data owner, the service title, and gives access to the legend, the web site of the data provider to get more information about data, the metadata related to the layer, and the service URL (if you want to copy and paste this URL to use the WMS service in another web tool such as Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/ or Dapple (http://dapple.geosoft.com/ or Nasa World Wind http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/, perhaps to combine that service with non-geological data services)

Save and use Map Contexts to share your map

You can save the map context (list of layers chosen for display, geographic area, …) :
  • in OGC WMC(Web Map Context) format, so that you can share your map with other tools that can read WMC files
  • in KML format, to see your map with Google Earth or other tools using KML context configuration files
Click this button to use an existing OGC WMC map context.
